Blüthner Nosebolt Nut Extraction and Tool 2024-10

10/12/2024

The Blüthner piano nosebolt nuts require a special spanner for extraction. One nut has two slots as shown in pictures.
According to Debbie, my mentor, she and David Betts each took a screw driver to one slot and turned the nuts together. We tried this method and all vise-grips we had at the shop. The nuts were finally extracted but with deep tool marks. It will take some work to polish them. We could have done better without much damage. We could have made our own tools.
We have this locking C-clamp in the shop. The tips are fat but can be grinded to fit the slots on the nuts.
Take the clamp to a multi-purpose belt sander and grinded the tips down until they fit into the little slots on the Blüthner nosebolt nuts. Note, if your sander is for wood only, please use other grinders for metal. The metal dust stuck in the sanding belt can have negative effects on wood surface, according to Hillary York, instructor for Advanced Piano Technology at North Bennet Street School. Now we have a tool specially adapted to this type of nut.
