Pedal Bottom Plate Screw Replacement

2/24/2024

The pedal bottom plate screw is broken, half of it's head is missing. We couldn't find a machine screw the same size with the original one. Only screws at a slightly larger size are available at our local hardware store. Instead of replacing one screw, we decided to replace all three for uniformity. The new screw size is 1/4-28 or 1/4" in total diameter, 28 threads per inch.
To choose a tap for the 1/4-28 screw, the tap body shall print exactly the same size. From this webpage, you can find the proper drill bit size for the tap. Or you may search for "Tap and Drill Bit Size Chart". The 1/4-28 tap requires #1 drill bit. For the screw body hole on the pedal, clamp the pedal firmly in a vise, carefully and vertically drill through. Hold the tap firmly and vertically, slowly tap through. You pay turn a full turn then back up for half a turn, then continue with a full turn until the hole is tapped through.
For the pilot hole on the plate between the screw head and pedal, find a drill bit slightly larger than the diameter of the screw. Drill open the existing hole on plate so the screw body can go through with ease. Follow the same procedure for all three pedals.
Assemble pedal as usual. It looks nice with all three screws replaced, isn't it?
