We usually place the two locator holes from a rib to the soundboard at 1/3 of the rib length. In the middle of the soundboard, the crown makes it hard to push the dowels, inserted on soundboard, into the locator holes on ribs. On this piano, a rib was unsuccessfully glued because of that. So today, I tried to move the location of the transfer pins. But first, that rib was planed off and the soundboard sanded smooth.

A traditional clamping system for large laminations or large veneers can be very heavy and taking up a big chunk of space. Fine furniture maker John Cameron recommended VacuPress in Maine. Ernie and I recently brought lamination samples there for a in person demo to learn how to properly glue stuff together with a vacuum pump. The owner of VacuPress is Darryl Keil. His website is www.vacupress.com. Darryl discovered this vacuum gluing method by drying his own hiking food over 35 years ago. Since then, he has been inventing, experimenting, failing, and succeeding in this field. The base board in the vacuum bag has channels routed for air to escape. A lovely Boston grand piano was waiting to be tuned for chorus rehearsal. The location is close to the ocean so all the strings have more or less some rust. As usual, I turned the tuning pins counter clock wise to flatten each string until an obvious pitch change can be heard before pulling them sharp. As usual, I was scared as a rubbit afraid of any strings breaking. There had been 3 string splices on this piano. Yes, this was my first restringing job 10 years ago. I always wonder why Jude the boss trusted this naive short little thing to string this piano freshly graduated out of school.
