These notes are reviewed today while installing damper heads in the piano. Some of them are learned from Bechstein Factory. Some of them are from my boss Jude Reveley. Some of them are learned from my own failures. We usually refinish the damper heads and install new wires. The new wires are cut to fit between strings and the bottom of underlevers. After cutting, the cut surface is filed smooth so the wire move freely in the underlever post without binding. - Use squares to check if the underlever posts are 90° to the keybed. If not, the bottom of the wire shall be bent accordingly. - A tiny square is used to see if the damper head is sitting squarely. If not, bend the wire until the damper head is straight. The problem can be at the neck or the spacing between the two bends on the wire. - There are two bends on each damper wire. Locate the bends where they can be easily seen and adjusted in the future. The glue joint lines on the belly are very obvious references. Some technicians, including Jude, would like to glue damper felt in the piano after the damper heads and wires are installed. Cut the felt of spcial shapes before the head installation. This way, the felt installation later will be much easier and hassle free.
