Gypsy moths and their caterpillars eat and kill plantations. Often in springs, those spongy moth nests appear on plants, especially on trees. The caterpillars inside feast on the beautiful greens till the plant is killed. Here is an article about it: https://tompkinsweekly.com/articles/what-to-do-before-before-spongy-moths-damage-your-trees-irreplaceably/ There is one little tree in the barrier in between the lanes on route 128. It is a little over one meter tall. Early in the spring, it was covered with those spongy moth nests. It was very scary to look at. It was going to be slowly eaten and die. The trees around all had green leaves as the temperature raised. The little infected one was still bold, covered with those ugly nests. Each day driving home, I looked at it and hoped it could survive the year. "Fight, little one, fight!" I whispered to it each day. One sunny afternoon, a few very weak leaves started to hang on the branches of the little tree. They were dry and twisted, not healthy at all. It looked like the caterpillars were robbing nutrition from each newborn leaf. "At least there is hope, little one! Keep fighting!" I couldn't help myself yelling under the breath.
Day after day, there were more leaves showed up on this little fighter. Right, its name is Little Fighter. The foggy nests became smaller and smaller. Watching the nests shrink, my heart was lighted with fire. Summer stepped in quietly. All in a sudden, the Little Fighter was covered with vibrant green. The nests were as if they evaporated. Day in and day out, the green color on it turned more and more lively, shining under the nourishing sunlight. "You won, Little Fighter! You defeated the evil bastards! At least for this year," I screamed in the car on the highway. What a lesson. A fighting tree, fight for life, fight for survival. It won. What about us humans? When difficulties hit us, when deadly evils torture us, can we fight just like Little Fighter? Can we beat the devils? At least we can try, just like Little Fighter. Comments are closed.
