Rib to Soundboard Locator Hole Position Experiment

We usually place the two locator holes from a rib to the soundboard at 1/3 of the rib length. In the middle of the soundboard, the crown makes it hard to push the dowels, inserted on soundboard, into the locator holes on ribs. On this piano, a rib was unsuccessfully glued because of that. So today, I tried to move the location of the transfer pins. But first, that rib was planed off and the soundboard sanded smooth.

This time, the two transfer pins, 1/4" wide on the pin body, are placed close towards the ends of the rib or the beginning of the tapers, rather than towards the middle.

The soundboard is pressed down to make sure the transfer pins make accurate marks on the soundboard. A shallow hole for a 1/4" dowel is then drilled on the soundboard. Then the dowel is inserted and trimmed short to fit the 1/4" hole on the rib.

Dry fit the rib on the soundboard before gluing. The dowels go into the holes much easier without trying to press hard in the middle of the rib. The glue squeeze-out looks even this time. Then the squeeze-out is cleaned with a wet rag. Maybe this locating method would be put into practice again on the next ribbing project. We shall see.
